I was the official photographer for the Mount Olive Pickle Festival this past weekend. There were several musical acts taking part in the festivities and I photographed all of them. One of my favorite bands at the festival was called Ultimate Rock Machine. They are a rock band based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. They play famous rock songs from the eighties and beyond. Ultimate Rock Machine was the last band to play on the main stage at the pickle festival and the rain had been off and on all day. A studio strobe isn't something I usually carry around to photograph things because it can be heavy, especially when attached to a light stand. I happened to have my studio strobe in my car and I thought that this would be a great time to set it up and get something besides just natural light photos of the band. One great thing about having an off camera flash is that it can give depth and dimension to a photo. As you can see in the images, it looks so much better than just having light blasted from the camera's point of view with no shadows. If you know what you are doing as a master of light, then you can control it to your liking! Besides just having great lighting, it helps to capture great expressions in your portraits. I waited until I saw "that moment", when the musicians seemed the most "into" their music and then took the photo. This was Ultimate Rock Machine's second appearance in a row at the Mount Olive Pickle Festival. If you like rock music from the 80's, then I guarantee you will have great time seeing this band in person!
