I photographed a senior football player from Hobbton High school a few weeks ago. Avonte' wanted sports portraits as a way to remember his accomplishments on the field. He had several outfit changes and we moved around to several locations near the football field. We started out taking portraits in the picnic area of his school, where there is a gazebo with picnic tables. Hobbton High School has two wildcat statues near the entrance of the field and they are a great place to get unique images. I wish every high school had statues of their mascots! We took several images on the field, near the 50 yard line and then headed up into the stands. The sun was setting as we were headed into the stands and I had to work fast because the sun was setting so quickly. I then took him over towards the baseball dugout, which had the school logo on it. I thought it would be interesting to have the logo next to him in a portrait. Avonte' also wanted portraits in some casual clothes, so we finished the session by taking several portraits by a bench and some pine trees. When it came to posing, I would ask Avonte' if he had a pose in mind. I would evaluate each pose he chose and give him suggestions on what to do. Sometimes the poses needed no adjustments and others just needed a few tweaks. It can help with a person's confidence in front of the camera when they sense the photographer knows what they are doing.
