I had the opportunity to photograph famous battlefield dioramas recently! I travelled to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to work one of my most interesting photography clients ever! Charlie Klein is a fan of history and art and he's been creating both in some form for a long time. He's extremely talented! I've been friends and worked with Charlie for over a decade now, photographing his many creations. He spends untold hours of meticulous painting and adding details to famous battle scenes and famous railroad lines. He has several display cases full of battle scenes in his house, as well as full rooms dedicated to famous railroad designs that he's created. Charlie is a huge fan of the civil war, taking part in reenactments and even having an acting role in the civil war movie Gettysburg.
Charlie asked me to photograph his three most recent battle scene dioramas. The Battle of Bull Run, The Battle of Little Bighorn and the Battle of New Orleans. Each scene is on a 2.5 foot by 4 foot sheet of wood. He has a cabinet that stores all three of these scenes. It took me about 90 minutes to light and photograph the dioramas. Charlie held a piece of white foam core in the background, so that his kitchen would not be visible in the photos. I switched between using a macro lens for really close up shots of the figurines and a portrait lens so that more of the battle scene could be viewed in the photos. In the end, Charlie was very happy with the images that I created for him.
