When I create a portrait, I first ask myself how I can make the image as interesting as possible. In my opinion, too many photographers just stay with the trends and copy what other photographers are doing. I don't want to seem negative, but I do feel like following trends leads to a lack of creativity. There are also lazy photographers, who only learn natural light settings for their camera and never learn how to add off camera lighting to their images. Do me a favor, in a search engine, type the town where you live and the word photographer. Be sure to look at several photographers. Do their images all look generally the same? When you look at my portfolio at www.kirkpullenphotography.com, do you see any images with a variety of creativity?
Here are some of the questions you should ask yourself when looking for a photographer:
1) Does the photographer value quantity over quality?
Some photographers post too many photos to look through on their website. They end up showing mediocre or poor images. You should be able to tell the caliber of a photographer's portfolio in 10 or less images.
2) What types of photography do they offer?
Someone who shoots every genre of photography will usually only have average images and not have high quality images. Would you go to a burger place for good barbecue or a pizza place for good chicken? I think not! Kirk Pullen Photography only shoots portraits!
3) How much experience does the photographer have?
I started my photography business in 2007 and am constantly learning my craft.
4) Does the photographer shoot natural light and or flash photography?
Some photographers only do one or the other. Kirk Pullen Photography is experienced in both of them.
In the end, it's important to deliver the images that a client desires. If a client wants a look that everyone else has, then I can deliver that for them, but as a photographer I always desire to set myself apart from the sea of look alike images. Trends come and go, but great images stand the test of time.
