I recently had a portrait session with Sadie in downtown Goldsboro, North Carolina. Sadie has red hair and a fair complexion. It was lucky for her that the day we chose wasn't too cold. We had to postpone an earlier planned portrait session, because it was just too cold and breezy to endure.
I talked with Sadie about the direction she wanted to take for her portrait session. She sent me some example images to give me an idea of what she wanted. Having visited downtown Goldsboro several times, I knew it would be a great place to get the looks that she was going for. The downtown section of Goldsboro has recently been renovated and has really been upgraded in a positive way. Some of the upgrades include colorful paint on the buildings, statues, art, and an outdoor theater venue. There are several fantastic restaurants and shops that lend themselves to interesting portraits.
I noticed a building that had black and white stripes. Since Sadie was wearing a yellow dress, I knew it would contrast nicely with the black and white. We took several portraits at that location and moved to a garage door that had faded green peeling paint. We walked for a little while and I noticed three large rectangle blocks of similar size. Having repeating patterns is a great way to isolate a subject and draw attention to them. I had Sadie pose on the middle concrete block. Not far from the blocks was a fantastic street clock. We did several poses with the clock and with the clock in the background.
We then found secluded table under an umbrella that had elaborate decorations. I took a few photos and then a business owner came out and wanted to know what kind of photo session we were doing. The owner of the store called Uniquely R's was very friendly! She introduced herself as Ruth Glisson! I informed her about our portrait session and I told her what a great shop she had and how her business really lived up to it's name. It really is one of the most unique stores in eastern North Carolina. I had visited this business previously on a trip with my family to downtown Goldsboro. I knew it had numerous areas for great portraits, so I asked her if she minded if we finished our photo session inside of her business. She was more than happy to lead us on a tour. We finished our portrait session in the back of her shop where they sell coffee. Here is an article about her business https://www.ourstate.com/city-portrait-goldsboro/
