Fall is the best time of year for family portraits! The leaves changing from the greens to reds, yellows and oranges is very exciting and the temperature keeps everyone comfortable! While the time varies with leaves changing colors, you typically have about a month before the leaves fall off of the trees. The kids love fall too because they can hide and play with the leaves.

When photographing a family during a fall photo session, I like to find trees with good color and then put the sun behind the family to illuminate the leaves. This also keeps the sun out of the eyes of the family. The orange colors from the sun go great with the different warm colors of the leaves. I like to compose a variety of images with the family playing in the leaves and using props such as pumpkins or furniture for the family to interact with.
